***

The Definition of Meditation

Introduction

The text you provided is a reflection on the nature of meditation and its importance in our lives. The author argues that meditation is a simple yet powerful practice that can help us to live more present, aware, and peaceful lives.

Key Points

  • The author begins by describing a conversation with a friend about what they would do if they had one week left to live. The friend's responses all focus on external activities, such as traveling or spending time with loved ones.
  • The author then suggests that meditation is a more meaningful way to spend our time, as it allows us to connect with our inner selves and experience true peace and happiness.
  • The author goes on to describe the practice of meditation, emphasizing the importance of attention, awareness, and non-judgment.
  • The author concludes by stating that meditation is a state of being beyond the mind and time. It is a state of silence, peace, and oneness with the divine.

Translation

Here is my translation of the text:

The Definition of Meditation

A friend asked me, "If you had one week left to live, what would you do?"

One said, "I would travel," and another said, "I would stay with my child."

I said, "I would meditate!"

I would meditate for the whole week.

He asked, "What is meditation?"

I said, "Do you really want to know?"

I said, "The first step is to pay attention to yourself, your thoughts, and your body!"

He wanted to understand meditation through his mind! He wanted to find a new mental subject! He wanted to fill his mind with a new and exciting thing for a few seconds!

This act itself is the opposite of meditation!

I said, "Where should I pay attention to my body?"

I said, "To your weight! Your weight that is on the chair!"

He said, "How do I know if my weight is ten kilograms or fifty kilograms!"

I said, "It doesn't matter. Whatever it is, look at it. Feel it."

Our friend didn't follow up! But my mind is still thinking about the concept of meditation and how simple, necessary, and misunderstood it is.

To be honest, meditation is something that cannot be written!

To understand meditation, you have to do it!

When you become without mind, you understand it!

But not with the mind! You cannot overcome it with the mind!

It is like the concept of God. Or the concept of the moment.

Meditation is a state of being without mind.

It is a state that is also without time.

Because the mind creates time, and when you put the mind aside, you also put time aside.

When you put the mind aside, you also put aside judgment. You also put aside the question.

Maybe you even put aside writing!

Saying it too.

Meditation is a state of silence.

A state of God-likeness.

A state that cannot be written!

Conclusion

I hope that this translation is helpful. I believe that the author's message is a valuable one. In a world that is constantly telling us to do more, be more, and have more, it is important to remember that true peace and happiness can be found within ourselves. Through the practice of meditation, we can learn to let go of our attachments, quiet our minds, and experience the present moment in all its fullness.
